Linkers. Слова-связки: как их не перепутать

Умение правильно употребить нужную связку при построении предложений поможет не только сделать ваше высказывание логичным и связным, но и выполнить задания Кембриджских экзаменов. Рассмотрим некоторые группы Linkers. (Зеленым выделены связки для более официального стиля).

  1. Result (для выражения результата/ следствия)

so так что Anna texted me to say she’s going to be late, so let’s start without her.
as a result (часто в начале предложения) как результат  It snowed hard all night. As a result, the airport was closed.
therefore (часто в начале предложения) поэтому/ в следствии этого  We admit full responsibility for the error and therefore / consequently wish to offer you a refund.

We have not received payment for your bill. Consequently / Therefore, we are sending you a reminder.

consequently (часто в начале предложения) следовательно / и поэтому
  1. Reason (для выражения причины – почему? в связи с чем?)

because/ as / since

(as чаще всего — в начале предложения)

потому что/ так как  I have stopped writing her, because / as / since she never answers me.

As the weather is bad, we decided to stay at home.

because of из-за We decided to stay at home because of bad weather.
due to в связи с Sales figures have fallen drastically due to / owing to the recession.
owing to по причине/ из-за
  1. Purpose (для выражения цели – для чего? с какой целью?)

to / in order to / so as to + Infinitive с тем, чтобы/ для того, чтобы I decided to have lessons to / in order to / so as to improve my English.
so as not to/ in order not to + Infinitive чтобы не She closed the door quietly so as not to/ in order not to wake up the baby.*
so that с тем, чтобы They had an early night so that they would be ready for the race the next day.**
in case на тот случай, если Keep the receipt for the sweater in case your dad doesn’t not like it.

*NB!! Будет ошибкой сказать: She closed the door quietly not to wake up the baby.

** so that употребляется с can/ could, will/ would

  1. Contrast (для выражения противопоставления)

but / yet но / в то же время Anna was attracted to the stranger, yet something in her head was telling her not to get close to him.
however (часто в начале предложения) однако  Anna was attracted to the stranger. However / Nevertheless, something in her head was telling her not to get close to him.
nevertheless (часто в начале предложения) однако при этом 
although/ even though/ though хотя We enjoyed the concert although / even though/ though we didn’t have very good seats.*
in spite of + Gerund / noun несмотря на In spite of being clever, he failed the exam.

In spite of his knowledge, he failed the exam.

In spite of the fact that he was clever, he failed the exam

In spite of the fact that несмотря на тот факт, что
Despite + Gerund / noun несмотря на/ вопреки Despite being clever, he failed the exam.

Despite his knowledge, he failed the exam.

Despite the fact that he was clever, he failed the exam.

Despite the fact that несмотря на тот факт, что

*NB!! В разговорной речи though может стоять в конце предложения: He’s very friendly —  a bit mean, though.

    Добрый день, Оксана! А в чём разница между thoungh и although? В словаре они переводятся одинаково — «хотя».

      Здравствуйте, Елена. Вы совершенно правы. Связки переводятся одинаково. Разница в следующем:
      although может стоять в начале и середине предложения.
      though обычно только в середине.
